Unhappy External DVD RW Problems

Hey all,
I'm borrowing a BTC DRW 1108UI External USB DVD-RW off a friend to back up some of my data. Unfortunately my computer recognizes it only as a CD Drive. Odd thing is it recognizes DVD disks, in the properties for the device it includes a tab for DVD Region settings, and its name (when no DVD is loaded) shows as DVD-RW Drive.

Yet in the type column of My Computer it shows as CD Drive, and no writing software recognizes it as a DVD writer.

It works fine for my friend, the main difference is he runs a Windows XP Pro SP1 system and I run service pack 2.

Any idea?

Yes I have USB 2.
So far only Nero Express and the inbuilt windows one. I'll try another player sometime later but i'm guessing the problem is with windows Plug in Play drivers - I noticed when I uninstall/reinstall the drive the little PnP autoinstaller refers to detecting a CD Drive.

Ah ok. Windows XP cd burning, doesnt work with dvd only cd.

Thats why that doesnt work.

Nero is it an OEM version (yours)? If it is, then if the DVD burner didnt come with the version of Nero, that is installed. Thats why that doesnt work.

It'll only work, with the burner it came with.

Can't remember if its the OEM version, I have the full version of it somewhere around but i'm not sure which one i've got now.

It does have DVD RW functions though (and i've never had a DVD RW before), but you have a point - it might not be liking Nero.

...Would have thought MS would have different PnP drivers for DVD RW's.

In Nero go to help/about nero burning rom. What version does it say here??

As the version you're using doesnt show in Nerovision, but it does in Nero.

Dont think it'll be the drivers for it, it'll be whether you're using an OEM version (if u had or have a cd burner already), and trying to get nero to detect the DVD RW, which wont get detected by an OEM version.
